Oliver! France is a wonderful country with coastal plains, rolling hills, beautiful beaches and snow-capped towering mountains. Gorgeous coastlines and lakes make for a lot of fun destinations for the holidays or just weekend get-aways for kids and their parents and friends. There, in the summertime, children can try some water sports, play with the ball, build sandcastles on the golden sandy beaches or maybe play a game of barbichette. After, they can enjoy a delicious "crêpe au sucre".
Lots of kids go also to the mountains or forested hills in the summer to play in the fresh air.
Or they can explore the magnificent valleys of the largest rivers: Loire, Seine, Garonne
and Rhône. The highest peak in France is called Mont Blanc and is covered with snow all year.
There you can go hiking, biking and you can have adventures in the forests while seeing
some cute marmots. Who do you know in your family who can tell you more about summer in France? Maybe Mum has old photos from when she was a child.
What did she enjoy most as a child during the summer?

Are you curious about winter in France?
Except for the islands and cities near the coasts,
you almost always have snow, and it can get incredibly cold, Oliver.
In the cities, the children go ice skating, or they take their sledge
and enjoy a ride in one of the hilly parks.
France has many popular skiing regions with thick and lush snow, where people enjoy their holidays
or their weekends catching snowflakes and building snowmen. Can Mum tell you more about her winter experiences

Time to eat!
What do you think the French like to eat?
France has a lively tradition of music and dance stemming from folk traditions.
Kids can join in the Bal-musette dance, while accompanied by an accordion.
Or, they can hop at every other step while dancing the Farandole.
Other beautiful traditional dances are the Tourdion, the Bourree and the Gavotte.

Many, many years ago Mum came into this world. This was a long time before you were born, Oliver! Mum was born as you were, but she was not born in Switzerland, where you live now. Mum was born in France, which is in a different country.
Let's share more about this wonderful place because, in a way,
a part of you also comes from France.

Here you can see a map of the world, Oliver.
Can you find the flag with a white cross on red background? Very good! This is where you are right now – in Switzerland!
The flag of France is a tricolour flag featuring three vertical bands
coloured blue, white, and red. Can you see it?

How far away is France? With a car, you need between one and twelve hours, depending on your final destination in France!
This is like having a couple of breaks for playing and reading. Wow… This is not so long. You would get there quite fast, Oliver!

It’s relatively easy to get there with a plane, and the flight takes around 2 hours. 2 hours is the time when we finish breakfast until we return from playtime to prepare lunch.

How about the money used in France and in Switzerland?
When you are out shopping, you’ve probably seen
the coins and banknotes used in Switzerland. They are called Swiss Franc.
They are called Swiss Franc.
In France, money is called the Euro. They are the same money as in other European countries. Before the Euro, France had its own money, which was called French francs. Does Mum have some Euro or even maybe some old French francs coins to show you? French children put Euro coins in their piggy banks!
Have you ever seen any of this stuff, Oliver?
This is the equipment used for playing
some of France’s favourite sports.
All over the country, children love to play football
and many families watch matches together.
Other typical and very intense sports are rugby, tennis, basketball, skiing and biking. Most sports are team sports, where kids form dear friendships and fond memories.
The Tour of France is the most famous bicycle race in the world
and it is held across France. Cyclists compete over three weeks.
Many kids watch it or go and cheer by the sidelines
and dream of being part of it one day.
Isn´t this incredible, Oliver?
Anyone’s stomach will start to rumble

Time to eat!
What do you think the French like to eat?
The French love their food, which is diverse as the regions are, but mostly based on fresh vegetables, meat and cheeses. A fresh baguette bought from the local boulangerie is also a must. Some popular dishes are Ratatouille and Beef Bourguignon. The last is a tasty, traditional beef stew, where the nose, mouth and tummy all enjoy the mix inside. For dessert, you can have your favourite, delicious macarons. They come in many colours, each colour indicating the taste of the filling and they melt in the mouth! What are Mum's favourite French dishes? Have you ever made French food together?

Kids can hear or sing beautiful chansons, cancan and cabaret music, which can be played with the harp, flute, bagpipe, accordion, guitar or violin. Aren't all these lovely traditions, Oliver? Maybe Mum can show you some steps of one traditional dance and introduce you to the typical music?
Kids can have so much fun across France
from visiting thousands of magical castles
and palaces to celebrating with a few
Grosses Têtes at Nice Carnaval,
or be amazed by the sculptures created from
lemons and oranges at Carnaval de Menton.
After a full day of fun, people
can jump on the fast train
TGV for their next adventure.
En route, the parents read to their kids famous children books
like the Little Prince or The three musketeers.
The little ones' eyes are curiously watching the beautiful French villages
and vineyards across the train window.
How exciting do these adventures sound to you, Oliver?
A cute French car which brings back nice memories is an
old Citroen roaming the plains. Kids can imagine racing it as training
for their future yellow shirt at Tour de France, before heading into one of the big cities
for some culture and art at the many grandiose museums.
Paris is the capital of France, and it is breath-taking, Oliver!
There, kids find amazing buildings full of history and stories at every corner.
They can climb over 1660 steps to reach the top of Eiffel Tower,
or just over 250 to reach the Basilica of Sacré Cœur. One funny French tradition
is the April fish. The joke is to see who the kids can fool by sticking a funny fish on their back. What parts of France has Mum explored and enjoyed already? Can she tell you more about her favourite places in France?
