Romania is a beautiful country with a big coastline at the so-called Black Sea.
But the water is blue, even though it is called the Black Sea, Oliver.
Legends say that sailors called it the Black Sea as in winter the water looked so dark due to severe storms.
In summertime in Romania, children spend their time at the beach.
Some kids go to the beach to play in the waves and build sandcastles.
Lots of kids go also to the mountains in the summer to play in the fresh air.
The mountains in Romania are called the Carpathians.
There you can go hiking and you can have adventures in the forests.
Who do you know in your family who can tell you more about summer in Romania? Maybe Mum has old photos from when she was a child.
What did she enjoy most as a child during the summer?

Are you curious about winter in Romania?
There is always snow in winter in Romania
and it can get incredibly cold, Oliver.
In the cities, the children go ice-skating or they take
their sledge and enjoy a ride in one of the hilly parks.
And in the mountain area, you have many popular skiing regions, where people enjoy
their holidays or their weekends catching snowflakes and building snowmen. Can Mum tell you more about her winter experiences
when she was a child?

What do you think Romanians like to eat?
The Romanians can be proud of the country´s traditional folk dances and music.
A dance, which is pretty easy to learn, is Hora.
It is a circle dance, which gathers all the dancers in one big circle.
The dancers are holding each other´s hands and the circle
spins round and round.

Many, many years ago Mum came into this world. This was a long time before you were born, Oliver! Mum was born as you were, but she was not born in Switzerland, where you live now. Mum was born in Romania, which is in a different country.
Let's share more about this wonderful place because, in a way,
a part of you also comes from Romania.

Here you can see a map of the world, Oliver.
Can you find the flag with a white cross on red background? Very good! This is where you are right now – in Switzerland!
The Romanian flag has a blue, a yellow and a red stripe on it.
Can you see it? That is where Romania is.

How far away is Romania? With a car, you need around 20 hours!
This is like going to bed, sleeping a full night and being awake one full day.
Wow… This is very, very long. You would have to take long breaks during the drive to eat, sleep and play, Oliver!

It’s much easier to get there with
a plane, and the flight takes around 2 hours.
2 hours is the time from when we finish breakfast until we return from playtime to prepare lunch.

There is another difference between Romania and Switzerland: the money!
When you are out shopping, you’ve probably seen
the coins and banknotes used in Switzerland. They are called Swiss Franc.

In Romania, the money is called Lei, which means lion,
and it looks different.
Does Mum have some Romanian coins to show you?
Romanian children put lion coins in their piggy banks!
Have you ever seen any of this stuff, Oliver?
This is the equipment used for playing
some of Romania’s favourite sports.
All over the country, children love
to play football and tennis.
Another typical and very intense sport is gymnastics.
The athletes are very strong and train
many hours per day to perform their routines.
The first athlete ever, who got the maximum score
of 10 points at the Olympic Games, was a Romanian.
Isn't this incredible, Oliver?

Sarmale are a favourite, delicious, small cabbage rolls filled with meat.
Mici is very popular – yummy grilled meat rolls served with a good portion of Mamaliga,
a cornmeal mush served with cheese or sour cream.
Romanians love their Salata Boeuf. This is a creamy salad with meat and vegetables.
And you might love Cozonac! This is a typical sweet bread with nuts, typically served for Christmas. What are Mum's favourite Romanian dishes? Have you ever made Romanian food together?

It symbolizes wishes for a happy and joyful life. That is why it is popular at weddings. They dance for the couple to have a happy future ahead. Isn't this a nice tradition, Oliver? Maybe Mum can show you some steps of the Hora dance and introduce you to the typical music?
The capital of Romania is Bucharest! It is the largest city
in the country. It has a lot of beautiful buildings, a lively old town
and green parks with playgrounds for all the children living there.
And do you know what you can observe every year on the 1st of March?
The Romanian men give a special present to the women! It is called Martisor and it is a red and white cord with a lucky charm attached to it. This can be a heart or a shamrock or any other lucky symbol. The woman wears the present for a few weeks and when she sees a blooming tree somewhere, she throws the Martisor into the tree to wish for something.
Can you recognize the lucky charms in the picture above, Oliver?
A very known and legendary place in Romania is Bran.
All over the world, the famous story of the vampire Dracula is known.
It is a spooky story, but don't be scared,
Oliver: It is an imaginary myth!
Can you imagine that this famous story is actually based on the historic Romanian ruler Vlad Dracul? The castle in Bran is the only one in Transylvania, which fits the story's description of where Dracula resided: Situated at the very edge of a tremendous cliff... Has Mum ever been there?
Can she tell you more about Dracula?
And what's the matter with the garlic?
Mum will tell you...
